A farce in one act

The young widow Elena Ivanovna Popova has sworn to remain forever faithful to the memory of her late husband and has shut herself away from the world in mourning. But her seclusion is rudely interrupted by Smirnov, a landowner — hot-tempered, blunt, and unrestrained — who has come to demand repayment of a debt. An ordinary financial dispute quickly turns into a verbal duel, then almost into a real duel with pistols, and finally into an unexpected burst of feeling.

The Bear by Anton Chekhov is a witty one-act farce about the clash of two strong characters, comic pride, stubbornness, and love that arrives precisely when it is least expected.
